Great thoughts from The Millennial Pastor - among them, “As I had yet another conversation lamenting the absence of young people, the decline of attendance and giving, and the general sad state of the present church it dawned on me. These people are grieving.” “God’s mission hasn’t changed, just the vehicle isn’t as fancy as... Continue Reading →
Call Me Bruce
Sometimes I find a poetic piece uplifting – I suppose that’s the appeal of half the Old Testament, from Psalms to the Prophets. Please take a moment to enjoy this one and drop by ferdswordsblog.wordpress.com for more from our brother woodtic – this poem in particular is a good reminder of the difference between how we see ourselves in our own minds and how we experience the world when confronted by our smallness in it – a call to humility we could all benefit from heeding!
I’m Chuck Norris with a 250 pound, 5′ 11″ 59 year old body,
Look me in the eye.
If I was younger and my physique was not so shoddy,
You’d see my fists can fly.
I’m Albert Einstein and Ravi Zacharias all rolled into one,
My wisdom known near and far.
Of course today I can’t even remember
Where the keys are for my car.
I am the politician with all the answers for mankind,
My popularity is soaring,
Yet while I preach from the pulpit on any given Sunday,
I hear somebody snoring.
Here I come just a walking down the street
With a million dollar smile.
Little do the people who see me know
I can barely walk a mile.
If I could only be the man up in my head,
I would be John Wayne, Tozer, and Carey Grant,
Of course those guys are dead.
Thanks for…

From Millennials to churches, social issues to Scripture, we talk about it all. What's your pleasure?
The Pain of a Prodigal: Why Children of Christian Parents Abandon the Faith
From God Interest magazine, some thoughts on why an increasing number of people, particularly Millennials, consider themselves as "Nones" - people without any religious affiliation at all. We think they make some good suggestions about how faith needs to be taught and practiced more in the home - many Millennials grew up with a faith... Continue Reading →
Change.
The story of a Millennial walking the faith with God in career – “With Satan working so hard to get me to leave this place, it actually reveals how much God needs me to be here.” It’s always amazing and encouraging to see Millennials taking on their workplace as a ministry and developing “church” everywhere they go by the relationships they build! Change.
Everyone handles it differently.
For years, I’d felt stuck and prayed for a change – a new city or a new job. Something drastic. And then unexpectedly, September 2016 sparked a major change in my life. My husband and I were offered jobs at a university in a new city over 1,000 miles away from our families.
And then a wave of change began. A new city. A new career. No family. No friends.
With all the drastic change in such a short period of time, I wasn’t sure what to expect or how to handle myself, but I was excited to start something new. I started my new job, worked hard to learn as much as I could while getting to know the new people who I worked with in an unfamiliar work environment. It was challenging to say the least.
This new job was in a career…

On Boomer Hate
Some great thoughts on generations in general. "The more I thought about generational struggles, the more I realized that generational warfare hurts us all." From "no generation is monolithic" to "the bigger the group, the less likely the absolute generalization is true," this article from The Daytime Renegade brings a lot of insight to the... The Gospel Is Supposed To Be Good News
Sometimes a Christian author really nails it. We wanted to share this post with you all because it sums up so much of what we like to talk about on our blog. Let's be honest, the modern American church has the reputation of making people captives to whatever arbitrary and stringent man-made laws are -... Continue Reading →
Are millennials leaving church? I don’t know, but here’s why I did
“Pastors want to see young butts in the pews, but in the broader scheme of things, church is not limited to a building. Church is other people. ” Great thoughts from Sarahbeth Caplin on why more than just Millennials are walking out of churches – but keeping their faith.
To be honest, I’m a little annoyed by all these alarmist-sounding “Why are millennials leaving the church in droves?!” kinds of articles. Okay, not all of them are quite so alarmist. More like…concerned.
There are sources that want to understand, like this one here, and Christian groups that just want a new demographic to make a strawman out of, like this one. And then there are personal blog-style posts that I kinda-sorta, almost-but-not-quite relate to, like this one, which hits many of my own concerns, and yet strays a little further from the points I wish it would make.
The problem is generalizing a demographic that really can’t be put in a box, no matter how large the survey sample. People are complex, as is faith. But Millennials tend to lean this way or that way, studies say. They vote in these patterns and support Issue X over…

Dismayed about prayer
We Rogues often look around at churches and ask, “Is this all we’ve become? Aren’t we destined for so much more?” Enjoy this great article from Laura at “Enough Light” on how prayer should be so much more than we tend to use it for as well.
Prayer. Awhile back I saw a question asked somewhere (forget where) about prayer. It was something like this:
If you found out that every prayer you have prayed for the last 6 months would be answered…Would the whole world be a better place, or would only your immediate life be better?
It is natural to pray about our own needs and those immediate to us, but our prayers should encompass more than that too. It is true that we can’t pray for everyone and everything in the world, but perhaps we need to broaden our prayers some? Perhaps our prayers are a bit self-focused?
I further thought of this question:
If you found out that every prayer you have prayed for the last 6 months would be answered…Would the answers be entirely/mostly physical in nature – health, employment, travel safety? Or would the answers be spiritual in nature too –…
